Thistlethwayte was born and raised in Sydney, New South Wales (born 21 April 1980) , and attended Beaumont Road Public School then Knox Grammar School. Born into a musical family, he started learning from his mother, a classical piano teacher, before his fifth birthday. His father, Ian, is a language teacher and a bass player and guitarist who played bass in a Sydney-based band called 'The Plebs', which formed under the name 'The Centaurs' in Sydney in 1963.
After a year at the Sydney Conservatorium, Thistlethwayte came to the attention of, and signed with Columbia/Sony in the United States. He released one single, Give a Smile to the Planet, which was released in Australia in mid 2000 and peaked just under the top 40 and completed an album, which was released as a promo but was eventually shelved. This particular label relationship appeared not to have flourished, but ended amicably. Fast forward Rai is the lead singer and primary songwriter in the Australian pop rock band Thirsty Merc.

two platinum) and fourteen of her albums (including two platinum and
four double platinum) have been certified gold by the RIAA. She has sold
an estimated 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the
world's best-selling artists of all time.

The song became a sizable hit for the duo, peaking within the top thirty of numerous record charts throughout Europe and ending 1999 as the most-played song on European radio. The single charted highest in Hungary, where it reached number one and in the duo's native Sweden, reaching number four it was certified gold in the latter country for shipments in excess of 25,000, and it was also certified gold in Italy for shipments of 15,000 units. The single reached the top ten in Finland, Iceland and Italy, the top twenty in Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland, and the top thirty in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Polish Airplay Chart. It peaked within the top twenty of Billboard's European Hot 100 Singles.
Roxette performed the song at numerous high-profile events in the UK, including the annual televised Party in the Park concert at London's Hyde Park, and on BBC One's Top of the Pops. "Wish I Could Fly" peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, making it their highest-charting single in the country since "Almost Unreal" reached number seven in 1993, although it would also prove to be their final top forty hit in the UK. Similarly, the song peaked at number 11 on the singles charts of both Austria and Spain, also peaking at number one on the Spanish Airplay Chart. It was released as the album's first single in Australia as a CD single on 20 May 1991. Starring as Nikki Spencer on the Australian soap opera E Street at the time the song was released, it became Melissa's first and only number-one hit.
"Read My Lips" was the only number one hit in 1991 by a solo female Australian singer and was nominated for two ARIA Awards. The song debuted on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart on 3 June 1991 at number forty-one. After just six weeks of being in the charts, the song had made its way to number one, knocking "The Grease Megamix" off the top spot. It stayed there for another week but then was knocked off the top by "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams. "Read My Lips" became Melissa's highest selling single of her career, spending eighteen weeks in the top fifty, and twenty-one weeks in the top 100.
