The song tells the story of a man about to be executed by the electric chair. The "Mercy Seat" refers both to the kaporet (the lid of the Ark of the Covenant) and to the electric chair. The song is laden with allusions to Christianity; in the Old Testament, the mercy seat is the symbol of the throne of God over the Ark of the Covenant.

"Early Winter" is a song by American singer Gwen Stefani from her second solo studio album, The Sweet Escape (2006). Written by Stefani and English pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, the song was released in Europe as the album's fifth and final single on January 18, 2008, by Interscope Records. Musically, "Early Winter" is a soft rock and synth-pop ballad with new wave influences. Critics found it similar to songs by English alternative rock band Keane, of which Rice-Oxley is a member. The lyrics of the song describe the nearing of the end of a relationship, and were speculated to be references to Stefani's own relationship with husband Gavin Rossdale.

Upon its release, "Early Winter" received generally positive reviews from music critics, many of whom commended Stefani's vocal delivery and the song's emotional appeal. The song attained moderate commercial success across Europe, reaching number six in Germany and Slovakia, number 12 in Switzerland, and number 14 in Finland. An accompanying music video for "Early Winter" was directed by Sophie Muller and was filmed in destinations like Budapest, Milan, and Prague. It contains scenes of Stefani in a palace-like hall in various gowns and at railway stations. "Early Winter" was included in the setlist of The Sweet Escape Tour, and the performances featured a special coda section delivered by American musician and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey.

"Walkaway Lover" is the third single performed by Australian actress/singer Toni Pearen released in October 1994, from her debut album Intimate.

Toni Pearen's first two singles "In Your Room" and "I Want You" both peaked at number ten on the Australian singles chart and were each certified gold. "Walkaway Lover" debuted at number 50 week ending 23 October and eventually peaked at number 35 week ending 11 November, 1994, spending a total of twelve weeks in the top 50, and sixteen weeks in the top 100. The single was issued to coincide with the much anticipated release of the album Intimate. Some could cite that the single's underperformance was because it was released more than one year after the successful second single "I Want You". This could also be seen as a reason the album itself also did not chart well.

"Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)" is a 1996 song by American rock musician John Mellencamp. It was released as the first single from his 14th studio album, Mr. Happy Go Lucky, and peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it his final top-forty hit in the US. It also peaked at number four on the Billboard Adult Top 40 and number 10 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. In Australia and New Zealand, the song became Mellencamp's final hit in both countries, reaching number 21 in Australia and number 35 in New Zealand. In Canada, it gave Mellencamp his fourth number-one single on the RPM Top Singles chart, staying at number one for five weeks, and his success would continue in Canada for a few more years. The song's music video features American actor Matthew McConaughey.

Mellencamp told Sirius radio in 2008 that "Key West Intermezzo" was co-writer George Green’s take on The Great Gatsby. "The big, long yellow car gave it away," Mellencamp said.

On 31 May 1998 Australian-born singer-songwriter, Natalie Imbruglia, released "Wishing I Was There" as the third single from her debut album, Left of the Middle. Prior to this song's release, Imbruglia's first two singles, "Torn" and "Big Mistake" were major chart hits during late 1997 and early 1998. "Wishing I Was There" followed, but was less successful than her first two singles, reaching number 19 on the UK Singles Chart, number 24 in Australia, and number 40 in New Zealand. In Canada, however, the song reached number five on the RPM Top Singles chart in September 1998, becoming her second hit there after "Torn", which spent 12 weeks at number one between April and July.

In the United States, the song was not allowed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 due to rules in place at the time, but reached a peak of number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart, where "Torn" had stayed at number one for 11 weeks. It also peaked at number 13 on the Adult Top 40 chart and number 15 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. Elsewhere, the song charted in Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, but did not reach the top 50 in any of those countries. It did, however, make it to number 27 in Italy.

The physical single of Imbruglia's version of the song has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide, including more than 1 million copies in the UK alone. In the UK, it is the 85th biggest selling single of all time. The track peaked at number two for three weeks, being held off the top spot by Aqua's "Barbie Girl". On 24 September 2007, Natalie Imbruglia's version of the song re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number 70, on the strength of digital sales after her greatest hits album was released. In the Flanders region of Belgium, the single peaked at a number one for 7 consecutive weeks and charted for 22 weeks. On the all-time Ultratop charts, it maintains a position of number 107.

As of 2011, "Torn" holds the record for most played song on Australian radio since 1990, played more than 300,500 times since its 1997 release, an average of 75 times a day, based on data compiled by the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA).

In the United States, the song peaked at number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for 11 consecutive weeks. However, as a result of rules preventing tracks which had not been released as physical singles from charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the song did not chart there during its peak of popularity in the United States. When the song was declining in popularity, the rules changed to allow airplay-only songs onto the chart, and the song charted for 2 weeks, peaking at number 42. It was a massive success in neighbouring Canada, where it peaked at number one on the RPM Top Singles chart for 12 nonconsecutive weeks, from 13 April to 8 June and 22 June to 6 July 1998. It was the most successful single of 1998 there.

In 2013, "Torn" was declared the No. 1 Best Pop Song on a top 10 list, part of a larger collection of songs by Q magazine in their special edition 1001 Best Songs Ever issue. Billboard ranked "Torn" the No. 26 Biggest Pop Song based only on pop radio charts compiled between 1992 and 2012. "Torn" remained the 19th most played song in the UK from 2001 to 2010. In 2005, "Torn" was listed at No. 383 on Blender magazine's list of "500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born"

In 1997, Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia, working with Thornalley, covered the song for her debut studio album Left of the Middle (1997). Imbruglia's version was recorded in Kilburn, London with David Munday (lead guitar), Phil Thornalley (bass, rhythm guitars), Chuck Sabo (drums), Henry Binns, Sam Hardaker (Zero 7) (drum programming) and Katrina Leskanich (background vocals). It was mixed by Nigel Godrich. Released as a single, Imbruglia's version became a worldwide hit.

For the track, Imbruglia received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, losing to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". The music video for "Torn" features British actor Jeremy Sheffield.
