Caligula - 1994 - Roundabout FLAC

Sydney band Caligula juxtaposed funk bass lines, heavy metal guitar riffs, hip-hop beats, techno keyboards and acid-house grooves to come up with a unique musical stew. Caligula's approach was similar in some ways to that of Def FX. Other reference points were UK bands KLF and Pop Will Eat Itself, or early (pre-`Epic') Faith No More. Certainly, from early on, the band's eccentric sound was the focus of a great deal of attention. Caligula even cracked the mainstream charts with a series of challenging releases.

Having taken its blend of electronic noise, samples and pop smarts as far as it could on the Sydney scene, Caligula made regular tours around Australia, including a support slot to UK visitors Pop Will Eat Itself (1992) and Depeche Mode (1994). In quick succession, Caligula issued the mini-album Caligula, and the CD EPs `Got One' (December 1991), `Bluff' (August 1992), I.C.U. (`Before') (April 1993) and `Tears of a Clown' (a 1990s updating of the old Smokey Robinson hit). As well as scoring well on the independent charts, the last two reached #55 (June 1993) and #25 (February 1994) respectively on the mainstream national charts. The album Rubenesque (March 1994) was a reaffirmation of the band's techno experimentation and more earthy pop roots.
